The Strap

Strap. What did first hit your mind after you come across this word? You must have thought it is just a piece of cloth or a flexible material or leather used for securing, fastening or carrying something or to hold something. It is so simple. A strap is used in numerous things. Wherever it is used, it has a sole purpose of fastening, securing or carrying. It is used in bags so that we can hold bags. It is used as a metal that is hinged for holding or securing things. It is also used in bra. Yes, you got me right. A strap is also used in a bra. And what is this bra? I hope all of us here are familiar with this word. We wear clothes for covering our body. The strap in any bra does the same work of fastening and securing, like it does in any other thing. There’s nothing new in any bra strap.

So, if the strap does the same work wherever it is used then why do people feel a bra strap should be hidden. And if somehow it is not hidden then why do they consider it to be something heinous. Okay now you will say a bra is wore as an undergarment and therefore it should be kept hidden. Fine. But there shouldn’t be any problem if somehow it is visible. As it is not a secret. I have seen and in fact I have experienced when somehow my bra strap becomes visible then there comes this one super lady or girl who waves me to hide it. And the gestures are quite bizarre. There is a series of odd coughing, rolling of eyes and some saying goes by- tube light is glowing or dandruff on shoulder. Sometimes, I feel as if I am carrying any gold or any explosive and I should hide it from people. Most of the time these gestures are done by females only. And they will act as if you did a sin by showing it off.

I don’t understand why people consider a visible bra strap to be a crime. It is visible because it has been worn by the person. So, if it is a cloth and is worn by someone and if gets visible then what’s wrong in it. Why to act so strange?  Okay I know it’s a good manner to not let your undergarments visible to others. But if it is visible then instead of saying, “hey your bra straps are visible” in a humble tone, people make uncanny gestures. Everyone knows that a bra is worn by female for giving support to their naturals. And there’s no point to consider it as hush-hush topic.

Also, it is a personal choice to either let bra straps to be visible or not. The girl wearing a bra has the right to decide whether she wants to flaunt her straps or not. If you don’t like to see a bra strap then instead of taking the pain of giving her signal just simply close your eyes or turn away. Making fun of a visible bra strap or giving strange gestures shows our psyche. Isn’t it strange that we never make uncanny nods when one of our shirt’s buttons is unbuttoned or our shoe laces are untied? We simply convey it. But we do something unfamiliar when we see a bra strap. Why so? Why can’t we act normal? Why can’t we consider the strap of a bra to be a normal thing? The more we consider a bra or its strap to be veiled, it will become more complex.

We live in 21^st century so why not to behave in the same way. We talk so much on maturity and equality. These talks will make sense only if we stop this weirdness. The day we stop such odd nods will be probably one of the best days.
